Components

  1. Main line or short leader straight to a strong, small hook
  2. A small, snug-fitting sinker (often a simple in-line or splitshot-style weight) just above the hook, minimal or no separate leader
  3. Fiddler crab or peeler crab bait, hooked to sit tight against structure

Setup

Hook
A small (size 1–2/0) but genuinely strong, sharp hook — both species have small, hard mouths built for crushing shellfish, and a light-wire hook can bend out on the hookset.
Weight
Just enough to get the bait down tight against pilings/structure fast — both species hold extremely close to hard structure, and the bait needs to reach them before drifting away from it.
Leader
Minimal to none — both species are typically fished with the sinker and hook close together, right at the structure, rather than a long separated leader.

How to fish it

Both sheepshead and tautog are structure-huggers with subtle bites and hard mouths — drop the bait tight against a piling or rock and be ready for a quick, sharp hookset the moment you feel resistance, since both species are notorious for stripping bait off the hook before an angler even registers a bite.

When to use it

  • Pilings, jetties, and rockpiles — the bait must touch the structure
  • Sheepshead in summer and early fall; tautog in spring and fall cool water
  • A moving tide, fished from the up-current side of the structure

Common mistakes

  • Fishing too far from the actual structure — both species rarely move far from cover to take a bait
  • Missing the hookset by waiting too long — both are famous among regional anglers for subtle, hard-to-detect bites
