Glossary

Plain-language definitions for terms used throughout the learning center — linked from the lessons that introduce them.

Bail
The wire arm on a spinning reel that flips open to release line for casting and closes to re-engage the reel for retrieving — opened by hand before a cast, closed by hand or a turn of the handle afterward.
Circle Hook
A hook shaped so the point curves back toward the shank — designed to slide out of a fish's throat and set in the corner of the jaw as the fish turns away, rather than being set hard by the angler. Reduces deep-hooking, which matters for fish you plan to release, and is legally required in specific situations (e.g. bait-fishing for striped bass, or for sharks under federal rules) — check current regulations rather than assuming it's optional.
Drag
The adjustable friction system in a reel that lets a hooked fish pull line out under resistance instead of snapping it — set too tight and a strong fish can break your line; set too loose and you can't fight the fish effectively.
Keep 'Em Wet
A catch-and-release principle: minimize how long a fish spends out of the water and out of your (wet) hands, since a dry hand or a long air exposure can strip a fish's protective slime coating or stress it beyond recovery.
Leader
A separate, often heavier or more abrasion-resistant length of line tied between your main line and your hook or lure — protects against a fish's teeth, sharp structure, or just gives a stealthier, less-visible connection near the bait.
Slot Limit
A regulation that lets you keep a fish only within a specific size range (e.g. 20-28 inches) rather than a single minimum size — fish smaller or larger than the slot must be released. Exact numbers change by species, water body, and year, so this project never restates them as fixed facts — always check the current official regulation before keeping a fish.
