Low-Country-Style Shrimp Boil
A well-known regional preparation (with real roots further south along the Atlantic coast, not a Hampton Roads origin claim) that suits the Bay's newly emerging recreational shrimp fishery well — see this guide's own species pages for white and brown shrimp before relying on a specific season/limit figure.
Drawn from a named source but not independently confirmed. Double-check before relying on it.
Standard low-country/Gulf-style shrimp boil technique adapted for this project's own regional context — this project does not claim this specific dish originated in Hampton Roads, only that it's a reasonable, common preparation for the region's real, newly regulated shrimp fishery. Not personally tested.
Ingredients
- Shell-on shrimp
- Small potatoes
- Corn on the cob, cut into pieces
- Seafood seasoning blend
- Optional: smoked sausage, cut into pieces
Steps
- Bring a large pot of well-seasoned water to a boil.
- Add potatoes first and cook until nearly tender.
- Add corn (and sausage, if using) and cook a few more minutes.
- Add shell-on shrimp last — they cook fast, typically 2-4 minutes, and are done as soon as they turn pink and opaque and reach 145°F internal temperature; overcooking makes them rubbery.
- Drain and serve, traditionally poured out onto a lined table or tray.
This recipe is editorially adapted from general regional cooking technique and has not been physically tested by this project.
