The Chesapeake Bay region is a documented sea-level-rise "hot spot" due to a combination of global sea-level rise and regional land subsidence — Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) research measured relative sea-level rise averaging roughly 4.1 mm/year across seven Chesapeake Bay tide gauges between 1969 and 2014, well above the global average.
Marsh habitat loss is a real, projected consequence: research synthesized by the National Wildlife Federation from VIMS and related sources projects that if sea level rises roughly 27 inches this century, the Chesapeake region could see a 30% decline in tidal swamp, an 85% decline in brackish marsh area, and a 76% decline in tidal flats — the same brackish-marsh habitat type several of this guide's own hunting areas (Ragged Island WMA, Hog Island WMA) depend on.
