Cold Water, Hypothermia, Tides & Changing Conditions
Cold water and Hampton Roads' tidal, weather-exposed marsh/bay environment are a bigger real risk on most hunts than the firearm itself.
Cold-water immersion can cause cold-shock response (an involuntary gasp reflex and loss of breathing control) within the first minute, and swimming failure — the loss of useful muscle function in the limbs — within roughly 10 minutes, well before classic hypothermia sets in. A PFD worn (not just stowed) is what keeps a hunter's airway above water during this window.
Tides materially change water depth, mudflat exposure, and boat-launch conditions over a matter of hours in Hampton Roads' bays, rivers, and marshes — check current tide tables for the specific water body before a hunt, not just the weather forecast.
Fog, sudden wind shifts, and rapidly dropping temperatures are common on Chesapeake Bay-adjacent waters in the fall/winter hunting season — check a real, current marine or local weather forecast (not general assumptions from the day before) before heading out, especially for any boat-based hunt.
Hypothermia risk builds gradually from wind, wet clothing, and prolonged stillness in a blind — dress in layers appropriate to actually sitting still for hours in cold, damp conditions, not just to walking to the blind.
