Chamber, Shell, Choke & Barrel Compatibility
Why checking these four things together — before loading a single shell — is a safety step, not just an equipment question.
A shotgun's chamber length (commonly 2¾", 3", or 3½" for 12-gauge) sets the longest shell that can safely be fired in it — firing an over-length shell in a shorter chamber is unsafe and can damage the gun or injure the shooter. Always check the chamber length stamped on the barrel against the shell length printed on the box.
Non-toxic shot generally requires larger pellet sizes than an equivalent lead load to deliver comparable energy — a shell box's stated shot size and material should match what the specific hunt and species call for, not just whatever's on the shelf.
Chokes constrict the shot pattern at the muzzle; a tighter choke (e.g. modified or full) throws a denser pattern at longer range, while a more open choke (e.g. improved cylinder) patterns wider at closer range. Some older or specialty barrels are not rated for steel shot at all, or require a specific steel-rated choke tube — check the barrel's own markings and the owner's manual before assuming any choke/shell combination is safe.
Always check the manufacturer's markings on the barrel/receiver and the owner's manual for the specific gauge, chamber length, and choke/shot-type compatibility of your specific firearm — generic advice from a hunting partner or a forum post is not a substitute for what your own gun's manufacturer states.
