Wind against tide
When wind opposes tidal current, the water stacks up into a short, steep chop. A 15-knot wind against a strong tide can be far worse than 20 knots with it.
Have a turn-around rule
Decide in advance what conditions send you home, and hold to it. Deciding in the moment, already wet and invested, is how people get hurt.
