Start with the license question

Virginia requires licensing or registration for most fishing, and saltwater and freshwater are handled differently. Confirm what applies to you before your first trip — it takes a few minutes online.

Buy one setup, not five

A 7-foot medium spinning combo will catch nearly everything reachable from a pier, marsh bank, or lake shoreline in this region. Add specialized gear only after you know what you actually fish for.
