Fish handling from hookset to cooler

Decide before you land the fish. Releases need speed and wet hands; harvest needs an immediate bleed and ice.

Releasing well

Use a knotless rubber net, wet hands, and support the body horizontally. Keep air exposure under about fifteen seconds and skip the extended photo session.

Keeping well

Bleed the fish immediately, then get it into slush ice — not a dry cooler and never a stringer hung in warm water. Most complaints about the taste of local fish trace back to handling, not the species.

  • Bleed, then ice within minutes
  • Slush ice (ice plus water) chills far faster than ice alone
  • Fillet cold fish; warm flesh tears
